Awaji Botanical Garden and Greenhouse
Awaji City, Japan
Awaji Greenhouse is a 72,000-square-foot botanical garden composed of five distinct gardens within Tadao Ando’s iconic Yumebutai complex on Awaji Island, Japan. With no architectural changes allowed, our scope focused on MEP and lighting to reinforce Ando’s original spatial narrative—from compressed, dimly lit garden paths to the dramatic 65-foot-tall greenhouse filled with daylight and plants. Lighting acts as a quiet storytelling layer, guiding visitors through this transition. At night, the existing sunshade structure becomes a luminous ceiling, softly uplighted with color-tuned light inspired by sky, clouds, and surrounding mountains, extending the natural atmosphere after sunset.
